International artistic competition on Europe’s Become

Submitted by on June 20, 2012 – 13:10No Comment

The Italian non-profit organisation Atelier Paema, Spazio Urbano Protetto launches an international artistic ideas competition for the conservation of the future of Europe. The competition is open to all architects, engineers, artists or students, regardless of their nationality, until the 15th October.

Atelier Paema, Spazio Urbano Protetto is a hub between Orient and Occident, which aims at promoting and stimulating intercultural creativity.

Through temporary exhibitions, intercultural workshops, philosophical seminars, Atelier Paema’s action is intented to be “a lab for ideas and life to come”, “an incubator for meetings, new projects and proposals” across boarders.

Among their most recent projects, in May, a transnational reflection was devoted to the improvement of urban environments, following their social transformation, with a comparative approach of realities in Roma, South of France cities, Berlin, London or Los Angeles.

Concerning the application to the competition on Europe’s become, Atelier Paema’s President, Dr. Paolo Palomba, clarifies the jury’s expectations in a special guide. They are searching for ‘a highly functional artistic-design-cultural vision, [which] therefore, requires the competitors to synthesize the exceptional and unique cultural heritage, both material and nonmaterial, which Europe has maintained during the time and will project in the future. The competition requires participants to express an “ideal symbol” of Europe, and to propose an area to place it. The design idea can be seen as an expression of architecture, art, landscape, urban design, engineering, or as a combination of them, having the “status” of “place of public interest”. It should, moreover, possess functions and usability of public utility, for example, an open area, a green space, a park, a shoreline, a promontory, a square, an existing building reconverted. The design idea should then be based on a multidisciplinary creation that brings to a synthesis of ideas enabling to express cultural and thematic plurality that characterize European identity.’

The spot of the artistic creation has to be located in the European Union but the idea of Europe concerns more widely the greater Europe.

And sticking to the organisation’s desire to open dialogue across continents, the competition is open to artists from all over the world. According to us, this is one of the strenghts of the project, by potentially gathering very rich and different external views on Europe.

The project is organised with the support of the Italian Representation of the European commission in Italia
